I-45 Parkway & Tunnel Concept Presented In China
Camacho preparing to give a presentation on the I-45 Parkway & Tunnel concept to staff from the City of Shenzhen Urban Transport Planning Department, China.

The City of Shenzhen is located in the province of Guangdong in southern China at the border with Hong Kong. Originally a fishing village, Shenzhen was identified as a Special Economic Zone by Deng Xiaoping in 1979.

Shenzhen is located in the Pearl River Delta and covers about 780 square miles. It has a population of 13 million people in its metropolitan area and an average age of 30 years old.

In June of 2006 Camacho was invited to give a talk to the City of Shenzhen Urban Transport Planning Department on the I-45 Parkway & Tunnel concept and how to design pedestrian friendly urban streets. Camacho did not only shared his ideas and experiences but he learned first hand some of the growing pains and challenges encountered in the planning of the City's transportation system.

Shenzhen's roadway infrastructure compares to the infrastructure of many world class cities. Major roadways provide unique design elements that enhance the use of public transit while maintaining the quality of life and preserving the environment.
Transportation in the city of Shenzhen takes a new meaning. It is multi modal and explores technologies such as monorail. City planners are very contious of the current and future challenges encountered by Shenzhen. One of their objectives is that a large percentage of trips will be done via public transit. Shenzhen's subway is part of this vision.
City planners are giving significant attention to the quality of urban living. Pedestrian access and safety is one of their primary concerns.
